The Sunday Post : Get your Bookish News #93

November 8, 2015 meme 26

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kim the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  Grab a cuppa and let me bend your ear (eyes?) for a few minutes with all my bookish news.

Sunday Post

In January this year, I set out my 2015 goals for all to see.  And I was doing ok on most of them except for this one:

  • Declutter.  I have lots of items put aside in my spare bedroom that I don’t want.  I need to photograph them, advertise them and flog them!  Other items need to be bagged for the charity shop.

But FINALLY I’ve made some progress on this one!  I have sold some bulky items that I don’t need, I have sent 4 bags of books off the Charity Shop and given away lots more to friends and family.  And I’m reclaiming this spare bedroom that was starting to resemble an episode of hoarders.  Best of all I can start on organising this room properly and I get to work on sorting out my bookshelves.  It’s very much a work in progress but going though all my old books is the fun bit!

I also launched my new series – planning for a Successful Blog, Like a Blogging Ninja!  I love the feedback I’ve gotten so far and I’m excited about the other posts I’ve lined up for this series too.  I’m such a planner nerd and I love that I get to feature a topic that I feel so passionate about.

ARC Stocktake:

I’m at 16 books.  I’ve read one and added 2 new ones.  This week I’ve mostly been reading my own books and even a book that I impulse bought and read the same day.  I can’t tell you how much I love that I no longer feel I have to read back to back ARCs.

My heel is niggly but not sore so I’m pretty sure that what I’m doing is working.  I actually forgot to wear my Fitbit a few days but I’ve been to the gym 4 times and am averaging about 7K steps per day.

Hoping to step this up next week.

I didn’t track a morsel of food!  Partly because I haven’t made the best of choices but I’m starting fresh again today.

Books I have received to review:

The Secret by the Lake by Louise DouglasCarry the One

Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for The Secret by the Lake.  I honestly just saw the word secret and that gorgeous cover and I was clicking as quick as I could.  I didn’t even read the synopsis!

Thanks to Tantor Media and Edelweiss for giving me an audiobook of Carry the One.  Now I just have to figure out how to listen to it.  I normally use Audible to listen to Audiobooks but this has a compressed zip file that I’ve saved to my computer.  Is there an easy way to put this on to my phone and listen to it there?  Any ideas?

Books I have Bought!

The Secret of the Old Clock

I was listening to Super Serials podcast as recommended by Katherine at I Wish I Lived in a Library and I just had to go buy a Nancy Drew book afterwards.  It makes me laugh that this book is about a missing will and read that title, it’s a HUGE SPOILER.  In the flipping title!  Too funny!

Well, that’s  my week wrapped up.  Happy Reading to all.   How was your week?  Any books you were really excited about?

I love going through old books and re- discovering books I don’t remember getting! LOL. It’s like discovering them a second time. Nice pic of your shelves- you do have a lot!

That is too funny about Nancy Drew! I listened to that same podcast this week, after seeing Katherine talk about it- and they were funny! A lot more upbeat and snarky than some other podcasts I tried… I’m sure I will listen to them again! I listened to their Nancy Drew one as well, thought I’d start w/ that. 🙂

When I get audio ARCs from Tantor, I transfer them to iTunes. I open the zip file, then highlight all the chapters and click open, then it opens in iTunes. Then, I create a playlist so that I have the audiobook separate from my music.
Congrats on making so much progress on your decluttering, Trish! I need to go through some of my clothes, maybe I’ll do that today, while listening to an audiobook 😉
Have a fantastic week ahead and happy reading – and listening.

Thank you so much Lexxie! I’ve just done that and it worked perfectly. Now I can starting listening in the gym today! Yay 😀

  3. Grace @ Rebel Mommy Book Blog

Good job on clearing out the extra room. Mine is how yours used to look. It is totally the dumping ground. Maybe one day I will get to it! WIth the audiobook- if you casn transfer the files to your phone – maybe using dropbox? or just connecting and moving over – I used the app Smart Audiobook PLayer. It is a great app to listen to those kinds of files. It searched them out and puts them in order for you to listen to. Enjoy your new books and have a great week!

Your shelves are awesome! You have a big shelf that holds a lot of books. Mine are spread throughout my home, with only two big shelves. And yes, the best thing about book purging is enjoying thoughts about each book as we stack them into piles. But it can take forever to finish when we do this…

I have the first three Nancy Drew books that I bought a few years ago, but haven’t reread them. Forgot about the significance of that spoiler title…

    Enjoy your week…and here are

I really could use to do some decluttering soon too, we still have our old table and a bank standing around that we need to sell or give to charity. It’s just standing here, but it’s hard to get the motivation to do antyhing about it as so far it’s not really in the way. That’s great you made some progress on the decluttering.

That must be fun to do an impulse buy and immediately read it, I can’t remember the last time I did that. Have a great week!

Oh that title spoiler! I had forgotten about that! I’m so glad you enjoyed Super Serials! I’m anxiously waiting the new episode which will be a Babysitter’s Club book. One of the hosts is out for an appendectomy and I want her to recover immediately!
I’m looking forward to your next blogging like a ninja post. It’s good to get a little more focus which I desperately need!
Good luck with the bookcases! That sounds like a fun project! I love organizing books. Congrats on the ARC pile and the spare room declutter. I need to do another closet purge and get rid of about half the stuff in the Tornado’s room but haven’t worked up the energy yet. Have a fabulous week!

  7. Terri M., the Director

I never go into Nancy Drew. My mother got me hooked on Trixie Belden. There are 39 books in that series and I think I got through book 16 or 17 before I couldn’t stand the repetitive nature of them.

I do have 38 of the 39 Trixie Belden books in my personal collection. I’m one book short only because I’m cheap and refuse to pay what people are asking on eBay for a book that sold for $2.00 when it was published.

I am jealous about your ARCs – my new policy is that if I didn’t ask for it then I have no obligation to it. Als, if it is an E-ARC I don’t feel bad: It is not a paper and ink commodity they spent money printing and mailing. And, since there are several publishers I have repeatedly asked not to bother to send me certain writers, age groups or genres several times and the books keep coming I feel very little pressure about it.

First, I LOVE your book shelves; the wood is so pretty. Can I tell you that I get cursed on a monthly basis by neat freak hubs about my mess books shelves? I just gave up and put most of my books in bins in the basement. A lot went into a closet where my hubs can’t see them – hysterical!

Second – Keene spoiled her own freakin’ book!!! Unbelievable!!! Thank you for that!!! I can’t wait to share that nugget of awesome knowledge 🙂

Great job organizing! I think you’re doing great!!

  10. Berls

I have an app called Smart Audiobook player – I think Kimba recommended it initially – that’s what I use when I get audio books from Tantor or Random House. Happy listening 🙂

Congrats on making progress on the clutter – I’m so envious of your book shelf, I need more room so I can have one like that.

Glad the heel is doing well, good luck with tracking food this week 🙂

I love the picture of your bookshelf!!! I have similar shelves and they are a total mess. I am going to start my project: decluttering/organization this week – my whole house needs it desperately!!! I think I need to make a list and work off that, so that I don’t get distracted and can check off rooms as I finish them – that will keep me from getting discouraged as well. It’s a huge job, but so needs to be done! Love your blogging post, too and can’t wait for more!!!

  12. Dee @ Dee's Reads

OMG I love your bookshelves!! It’s so nice to see a big huge shelf space! Since I moved I had to get rid of most of my books but I have them in boxes under my bed//and above the kitchen cabinets LOL. I only have one tall skinny shelf and two small ones which are packed..So it’s serious book porn seeing yours 😉

Ah I love Nancy Drew! Love the old copies they’re so cute! It’s so great to see you achieve your goal of catching up on your ARCs. I was doing great but then when Edelweiss put up a bunch for 2016 a bit ago I broke, and said oh well its for 2016—thats far away! haha not so far though anymore! So I feel that stress and still feel so bad I can’t read my own books 🙁 How long would you say it took you to get from where I am now to feeling like you do now with not having too many ARCs to read and being able to read majority of your own books?

  13. Bea @Bea's Book Nook

Whoa, look at those bookshelves! I’d love to come shop them. Good luck organizing them; I’m sure you’ll find some treasures you’d forgotten about. Decluttering is time consuming but it is worth it. That said, I should do some decluttering of my own. 😀

The Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys titles often did give away key plot points but I don’t think the publishers worried about it way back when. I loved those books as a kid. 😀

Have a good week and happy (non-ARC) reading!

Am coveting Secret by the Lake – looks interesting.

And well done on starting decluttering! It can be a mammoth job. I’m not much of a hoarder but need to be more on top of that sort of thing.

And the new blog series sounds fabulous Trish!

  15. Cynthia @ Bingeing On Books

Oh man, seeing that Nancy Drew cover took me back to when I was younger. I don’t remember it, but I am sure I read it because I read just about all of her books. That is so funny! And congrats on decluttering. I need to do that too! Maybe I should do it soon so that I can start the new year with a clean slate.

  16. Heather @ Random Redheaded Ramblings

I have actually bought some old Nancy Drew books so I can re-read them, I loved her and the Famous Five when I was younger, they are my guilty reading pleasure.

I would love to de-clutter but I never seem to get around to it, plus I need more bookshelves but the other half is vetoing my need for more space – he is not a reader!!

    Have a great week!
