Between Reads : 10 Things that make me happy

February 3, 2015 Between Reads 26

Between My Reads is a feature that appears on here sporadically. As I’m sure you might have guessed by now, I’m passionate about books. However, they are not the be all and end all of my life so I thought it might be fun to share some other stuff now again here too. If this doesn’t interest you, don’t worry books will be back on the agenda tomorrow.

I think I’m a fairly easy person to please as it doesn’t take much to make me feel happy.  I try to take the time to appreciate the small things in life that just make life more pleasant and I have a Gratitude Journal app on my phone that I fill in, not daily but pretty often.  And I find even just thinking about what to include makes me feel great.  And it’s never the big things, it’s always the small things that might go unnoticed if you weren’t paying heed.

10 Things That make me happy!

Outside of books and blogging, that goes without saying.  Right?

Solitude – I love peace and quiet.  I can tend to be a lone wolf but I’m not a total loner.  I’m lucky enough to have great friends but those evenings at home reading, with a candle burning or the fire blazing are the moments that revive me and I treasure them.

Hugs with my cat Socky.  Other cat lovers will appreciate the comfort of sitting down with a cat in your lap and how you can just zone out while petting them.

Nice smelling things!  I know that’s a bit vague but I love scented shower gels, scented candles, scented anything really.  My favourite candle of all time is the Roger & Gallet Fleur d’Osmanthus which is a huge treat as it’s spendy.  But I love candles from chain stores too and I’ll usually have one or two burning away every evening.

Time spent with family and friends.  As much as I love being alone at times, I also appreciate when I get a chance to relax and catch up with those who know me best.

The first mug of coffee in the morning.  Tastes so good!  And now it’s even better with my customised bookish mug!

Pay Day!  Who doesn’t love pay-day, especially on those 5 week months!  I always make a point of treating myself to something small, even just a new lipstick or nail varnish as it just marks the day for me.  And on pay-day, I buy myself an Amazon gift card too that I spend throughout the month.  It stops me impulse buying as I have to make it last.  That’s my excuse anyway and I’m sticking with it.

Rituals – I have morning routines and evening skin care routines that I follow.  More or less.  Sometimes I scrap them if I can’t be bothered!  But when I take the time to do these, I just feel more relaxed at night and fresher in the morning.  And calling them rituals rather than routines makes me feel like they are something good rather than a chore.

Bright colours.  I love wearing bright colours such as pinks and reds as they just suit my skin tones and hair colouring best.  Plus they just make me feel good.

Swimming in the Sea.  There is a provision attached to this one though!  The water HAS to be warmish.  I’m not a fan of cold water so that’s Irish beaches ruled out.  But swimming when on holidays in the sun is one of my favourite things.  Can you tell I’m a Pisces?

Taken in Lanzarote! Wish I was there!

My phone.  This might sound ridiculous but I love my phone!  It’s always within hands reach and everything about it makes me happy.  It’s a lovely peach colour, it has all my favourite apps and means that friends are only ever a text or phone call away.

Yes for fuzzy socks! And I don’t have a dog but I do walk my parents dog a lot and I love him! Now he knows how to be happy in the moment when you shake a lead at him!

What a great idea! I find it so easy to get caught up in stressers that I can overlook all the great stuff. I love the first cup of coffee in the morning especially in my favorite mug (still can’t get over your awesome bookish one!) and my phone is definitely one of my favorite things! I love reorganizing my bookcases. I love your Amazon GC idea. I may have to do that myself!

A walk on the beach does it for me too. And I don’t even care what the weather is, I just love the sea and the fresh salty air.

Ketchup! That was random and made me laugh. I never enjoyed cooking much before, it was just another chore that had to be done. But I’m getting more in to it nowadays and having fun experimenting with new recipes. I still don’t like baking but eating the goodies makes me happy!

Great post! I agree with most of these. I just love snuggles with my pet rats and they always make me feel better. I don’t drink coffee, but my first cup of tea in the morning is always so good. I also love my routines and my alone time. And yes to nice smelling things, for me this usually means dinner or cookies I am baking. I just love the smell of food.

Snuggles with pets you love are the best! And I love the smell of a nice dinner cooking too. I don’t really bake at all anymore but eating cookies does make me happy!

Well you are in a better place than I am for swimming! The sea here looks fab but brrrrhhhh, it’s too cold for me! Of course buying books makes me happy too, it’s an instant pick me up 🙂

Penguins are so cute! I know it’s out of season but you should google John Lewis’s christmas advert about Monty the Penguin. It’s fab and you will DIE from the cuteness! And I love travelling too especially to new places.

Your Amazon gift card idea is BRILLIANT and I’m totally going to steal it! I need to limit myself more, and what a perfect way to do so!

My cats make me happy (they do not snuggle, but they let me pet them without biting me every now and then 😛 )

Also squirrels. Just in general. We don’t have them here so every time I go to a place that does, the camera comes out!

The Amazon GC works amazingly well and it does help me to limit my spending (most of the time!). And it feels good to have a gift card too as then I don’t feel guilty about going over my limit or seeing a zillion forgotten book purchases on my visa card.
No shortage of squirrels around here! They always frighten me a little though until I see their tail in case they are a rat. But once I see that bushy tail, I’m happy!

Great list!! And we have a lot in common. Some things that make me happy: “peace and quiet”, friends, my dog, music, BOOKS, lazy weekends, travelling, pay day(!), matcha latte (though, I do like choco cappuccino too), sea/swimming (but also SNOW) and… my iPhone (yesss, I love my phone 😛
