An Ode to Maggie Stiefvater: The Raven Cycle

September 18, 2014 Bookish Fun 12

I love Maggie Stiefvater as I think she has one of the most unique voices in YA books.  The words in her books just fall out in the most unexpected ways and I can’t get enough of them.  The Raven Cycle series is one of my favourite series but when I finished The Raven Boys and The Dream Thieves, I was stumped!  I couldn’t review these books.  They just felt so special, that I couldn’t find the words for them.  So instead of reviewing I’ve just decided to do a spotlight by sharing quotes I loved.

The Raven BoysThe Dream ThievesBlue Lily, Lily Blue

This quote sums up all my FEELS for all the Raven Boys (Gansey, Ronan, Adam and Noah) and Blue.

“In that moment, Blue was a little in love with all of them. Their magic. Their quest. Their awfulness and strangeness. Her raven boys”

In the Raven Boys, Blue and Gansey were my favourite characters and these quotes give you a little flavour of their magic.  Forget stereotypes or black and white characters.  These are rainbow characters made up of all the colours.  Each character is lovingly shaded and blended so that every single one ends ups strikingly colourful and the words that etch them are a visual work of art.

“She wasn’t interested in telling other people’s futures. She was interested in going out and finding her own.”

“I guess I make things that need energy stronger. I’m like a walking battery.”
“You’re the table everyone wants at Starbucks,” Gansey mused as he began to walk again.
Blue blinked. “What?”
Over his shoulder, Gansey said, “Next to the wall plug.”

“In the end, he was nobody to Adam, he was nobody to Ronan. Adam spit his words back at him and Ronan squandered however many second chances he gave him. Gansey was just a guy with a lot of stuff and a hole inside him that chewed away more of his heart every year.”

However The Dream Thieves was Ronan’s book.  I did really like him in The Raven Boys but he OWNS The Dream Thieves.

“She wore a dress Ronan thought looked like a lampshade. Whatever sort of lamp it belonged on, Gansey clearly wished he had one.
Ronan wasn’t a fan of lamps.”

“Ronan Lynch lived with every sort of secret.
His first secret was himself. He was brother to a liar and brother to an angel, son of a dream and son of a dreamer. He was a warring star full of endless possibilities.

“Ronan gave in to the brief privilege of hating himself, as he always did in church. There was something satisfying about acknowledging this hatred, something relieving about this little present he allowed himself each Sunday.”

I can’t say it enough.  I ADORE this series .  They are books to think about, dream about and speculate about. Books to scare, horrify, giggle and swoon at.  And I can’t wait until I can get my hand on to Blue Lily, Lily Blue which is due out on 21st Oct.  Believe me that date is etched on my brain and it will be an auto buy.

Sooo I haven’t read this series. I don’t know, the synopsis for raven boys never jumped out to me? But I’ve been seeing so many people talk about this series with BLLB coming out soon that I’m intrigued. So I got the raven boys last week and am hoping to read it soon!

I hope you love it Wendy, I can’t even compare it to any other series to give you a taste of it as it is just so unique. I just adore it though and I love my raven boys 🙂

I’ve FINALLY read The Raven Boys just this past month. I’ve always been hesitant to do it, you know, after my bad experience with the Wolves of Mercy Falls series. I’m so glad I did though. This series definitely deserves the hype. I’ve bought The Dream Thieves but haven’t read it yet. I’m excited to do so though, because EVERYONE seems to have fallen in love with Ronan through that book, and like you, I don’t quite get the hype on him yet. So I’m looking forward to that!

Only one month to go! Hang in there. (And then, you know, another year or so for the next one? >.>)

I know, it’s hard to take a jump again after a bad experience with an author, especially with a series. I’ve never read The Wolves of Mercy Falls because 1) Your review put me off and 2) Wolves aren’t my thing!
I LOVE this series though and I think The Dream Thieves was even better than The Raven Boys as the plot just got even more entangled. I have no idea where this series is going and I love that about it.
And sigh, you’ve just reminded me how long I’ll be waiting for the next instalment 🙁
