A chilling, deeply creepy Hammer novella by Joanna Briscoe, author of the acclaimed, bestselling novel, Sleep With Me.

Rowena Shawn is fed-up. She and her family have recently moved into a new house in a small English village. They've taken on a local builder, but his efforts to knock two cottages into the bigger single house she envisages is fraught with problems.

The walls ooze damp, stains come through layers of wallpaper, ceilings sag, and strange noises -- voices -- emanate from empty rooms.  And then there's her daughter, Eva, who has always been odd, but is now positively strange. Once fat, she appears to be starving herself, becoming thinner with each passing week.  Neglected and unloved, Eva has formed a close and inappropriate attachment to the builder -- too close some of the villages think, and inappropriate because Pollock likes children just a little too much.

Then Rowena's eldest and prettiest daughter, Jennifer, goes missing.   As a frantic search is mounted, the house reveals its darkest secret: a hidden room with no windows and no obvious entrance. Boarded up, it smells of breath, custard, Dettol -- and death.  Set in the 1960s when many women's lives were hidebound by convention, Joanna Briscoe's novella is unsettling, deeply creepy and set in a world where appearances are everything, and absolutely nothing is as it seems.

Yay, glad you like the sound of it.

Random House publishers are releasing a series of horror stories from various authors under the hammer novella imprint. I’ve only read 2 so far but I’ve really liked both of them. They are getting some big names and it’s fun to see an author try a different genre.

I’m usually not one for ghost stories. Not because I find them too scary, but because I’m too skeptic most of the time as a reader to be lured into a mystery without some seriously amazing writing. But I trust your judgement, so I would really like to give this one a try. :’)

God, ghost stories. To me, there are two kinds: 1- scary, or 2- ‘heart’. I don’t know why I call them that but I do. The scary ones are, obviously, creepy and mysterious and usually the ghosts are the bad guys. But the heart ones are my favourite ones actually, and it’s more often when a ghost comes back and it needs help, or it helps sort things out amongst old friends, or something. I adore stories like that.

I love the way you break them down! I’m with you, I love the ‘heart’ ones too but a little creepy is good from time to time also 🙂

Oh Lord, yes I would love it! I am a big ghost story fanatic! Love to get spooked when reading a truly scary story. I just finished a real good one, The Haunting Season by Michelle Muto, and LOVED it!
