Book Review: The Perfect Family by Shalini Boland

November 13, 2018 Book review 4 ★★★★

The Perfect Family by Shalini Boland hooked me like a fish at the end of a line. Only I was one happy fish to be caught and reeled in. As basically over a 24 hour period I was flopping down to read this book every chance I got.

‘Mummy, she’s gone…’

Gemma Ballantine is getting ready for work one morning when her eldest child comes running down the stairs, saying the words every mother dreads.

The front door is open. And her six-year-old daughter has disappeared. Frantic with fear, Gemma starts a nail-biting search for her little girl.

After what feels like forever, her mother-in-law Diane finds Katie wandering lost a few streets away. Relieved to have her youngest child back in her arms, breathing in the sweet scent of her hair, Gemma thinks the nightmare is over.

But then her perfect family starts to fall apart.

And she realises it’s only just beginning…

My Thoughts on The Perfect Family by Shalini Boland

I was floundering around the small cast of tricky characters trying to decide who was the person setting everything in motion. At various points, I suspected everyone, and I loved how it kept me guessing. But I was also pleased to find my main prediction was correct.

This book is a slow burn, in a good way. It draws you in to the characters lives and makes you care. And then the tension just gets tighter and tighter chapter by chapter. And when I hit the last 20% I was reading with my mouth hanging open.

I felt very invested in this not so perfect family, and while reading wanted to swoop in and protect them. I love when I care about characters, especially when they are realistically flawed.

This was my first book by this author but it won’t be my last rollercoaster ride with her.

About Shalini Boland

Books and music are my passion and I’ve always been a writer in some shape or form. Before children, I was signed to Universal Music as a singer/songwriter. But that all seems like several lifetimes ago.

Now I combine motherhood with writing fiction. I write the kinds of books I love to read - suspenseful thrillers and gripping adventures.

Love the fishing analogy! I haven’t heard of this author nor the ones linked to her, but the book and your review says its worth reading! I like the strong character rating.

This definitely sounds like a book I would enjoy. I love when a book keeps me guessing. Great review!
