Pepper Jones is ready for an epic cross country season. She wants to qualify for Nationals, and she's willing to do anything it takes to make it happen. She can handle long miles and hill sprints, but boys? That's an entirely different challenge. Pepper's never considered revealing her deeper feelings for her longtime friend, Jace Wilder. After all, he's got the personal magnetism and good looks to hook just about any girl in town -- and he has. Their friendship stands apart from high school social circles, and they're both just fine with that (or at least they pretend to be). That is, until running star Ryan Harding moves to town. When it comes to running, Pepper's goals are clear. But when it comes to Jace and Ryan, it's nowhere near as simple. *This book contains mature content.*

My Thoughts on Pepped Up:

Books with sports themes are my magnets and they suck me up every time! I love reading books that focus on running as it makes me want to pound the pavements too.  And Pepper LOVES to run, the joy and release that it gives her made me happy as I get that.  I’m not a natural runner like Pepper but it’s my therapy and seeing her love for running just fires me up too.

I really enjoyed watching her get psyched up for competitions and even just the daily details of her running regime felt fun to tag along to.  Outside of her running ability Pepper isn’t the most confident of girls and her interactions with guys made me cringe a little at times.  BUT this is a series that you need to be patient with.  You need to give Pepper space to grow because believe me she does.

Her best friend Jace who is the love of her life can be pretty annoying at times.  I felt from the get go that underneath the rough exterior was a guy worthy of her but he needs a few sharp edges knocked off him first.  It’s always clear how much he cares for Pepper but he doesn’t know the right way to show this.  Again he needs time to grow and again he does!

So with interesting character development, a fab setting and lots and lots of drama, I was pretty happy that I had book 2 on hand to dive into.

Pepper Jones knew that being Jace Wilder’s girlfriend wouldn’t be simple. But she didn’t predict just how many complications would arise from his past. Jealous girls? That she expected. Family secrets? Not so much. At least Pepper can always hit the trails to clear her head… except when it comes to racing. The high expectations from her phenomenal cross country season haunt her, and she can’t seem to get psyched up for track season. Pepper’s junior year at Brockton Public is full of challenges on and off the track, but she’s not afraid to face them

My feels for this one are pretty similar to book 1.  The setting was ace and during this book I felt got to understand both Jace and Pepper a lot better.  They still both drive me batty at times but I’m firmly on their side.  They are teenagers making teenage messes at times but this edge of realism worked really well.

epper is finally a senior, and she’s determined to defend her national cross-country title. Although Jace is busy with the demands of college football, he’s still at Pepper’s side, supporting her goals. But is she taking her renewed enthusiasm for training too far?

As Jace and Pepper focus on their athletic ambitions, they discover that Jace’s social status has followed him to college, despite his attempt to keep a low profile. With her boyfriend as an idol on campus, Pepper discovers that she might just be a target to those who find Jace threatening.

Are Jace and Pepper strong enough to withstand the pressure from those who want something from them? It won’t be easy fighting for her title and her boyfriend, but nothing easy is worth winning… or keeping

When I started this book, my heart sunk a bit as Pepper was doing all kinds of crazy training.  I knew why she went down this route and I could even understand it a little but I was just waiting for the inevitable crash and burn.  As much as my heart hurt watching Pepper do this to herself though I also loved the angle this story took as it felt so realistic.  Athletes do push themselves and their competitive edge can blind sight them and I felt this was so well captured here.

Pepper and Jace are also put though the mill relationship wise in this one.  They have all kinds of pressure to deal with and there is a little bit of crazy drama-rama going on which I wasn’t a huge fan of.

But despite that I still enjoyed this one a lot.  It still remains heavily focused on the running theme and that keeps me reading happily.

Thanks Giselle, I just adore books with a sports theme and these pulsate with competitive vibes and energy. They were a lot of fun, thanks for giving me the chance to read and review them!

I’m glad you reviewed these, Trish, as I had my eye on them. I love reading a story set around sports too – especially running, for some reason. I’m not a natural runner either, but I do love doing it. 🙂 I’m glad Dean was able to make Pepper’s story so realistic. I liked that you said these were teenagers making teenage messes – because that’s what teenagers do. But I’m also glad you were able to watch Pepper and Jace grow…that’s a real draw for me. Great reviews!

I thought there was great growth in these books Brandee. Both Pepper and Jace (especially Jace) mess up a lot but they do learn from their mistakes and that makes it easier to feel empathy for them. And plus I just like them!

If you like drama Grace, then you’ll enjoy this series! I’m not overly a fan of it but I love the running theme so much and enjoy the character growth so that makes me tolerate the drama!

My body isn’t built for running either but I enjoy it so I just take it slow and mix in plenty of walking with the running and it seems to be working for me. I’m enjoying the character growth but my favourite part of the book is the running. It’s just something I love reading about!
