The Sunday Post : Get your Bookish News #69

June 14, 2015 meme 35

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  Grab a cuppa and let me bend your ear (eyes?) for a few minutes with all my bookish news.

Randomness:

I know this section is called random but this really is one of the most random things I’ve talked about!  I’ve been watching ASMR videos on Youtube.  I’ve always had trouble sleeping and came across ASMR videos when a Youtuber that I follow (Melanie Murphy) talked about them.  Basically they are someone whispering and making lots of sounds.  When I first looked at them I was full of giggles but then somehow I noticed how calming they are and they make me drift off within minutes.  So I don’t care how silly they are, they work!  Anyone else tried them?

Grace @ Rebel Mommy Book Blog wants to know do you suffer from Booknesia?  *shoots up hand*

Tonya @ Lilybloombooks talks about Fitting In.  This post just touched a nerve with me as I know its something I struggle with too from time to time in the blogger world.

Good week!  Thursday I didn’t meet my target as I had a night out but a lunchtime walk meant that I wasn’t too far off.  I love that my Fitbit made me very aware of steps that day during the day and I did try to fit in a lot of ‘non exercise’ steps around the office.

Books I have received to review:

The Other Child by Lucy AtkinsDa Vinci's Tiger by Laura Malone ElliottAwake by Natasha Preston

Thanks to Netgalley and Quercus Books for The Other Child.  The name drew me in and then when I saw it was about secrets and lies, I was all over it. It’s one of my favourite themes in books.

Thanks to Edelweiss and Katherine Tegen Books for Da Vinci’s Tiger.  All I saw was Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci and I snapped it up!

Thanks to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for Awake.  It’s a YA book about a girl who grew up in a cult.

Books I have Bought!

Party Girl by Rachel Hollis51LnQPmtwLL._SL250_

I bought Party Girl because I follow the author on Instagram and her photos are just the cutest!  So they made me want to read her book.  Who says social media doesn’t work?!

The Heartbreak Cafe was an Amazon freebie and I love Melissa Hill so this was a no brainer!  Click image for amazon link if you want to grab it too but make sure to double check price first.

If a person is competitive then a Fitbit will constantly make them do more. When you know how many (or few!) steps that you are doing, then you have something to work on and its a great way of making sure you move enough!

I want all my friends to get a Fitbit as I love the challenges! And yes The Other Child is lovely and dark and mysterious sounding!

I am totally going to check out those videos on YouTube because I am super interested in what they are! Thanks for the link back to my post! Also I have started wearing my FitBit again finally and found out what I thought – I am totally not moving enough. So I will try to change that now. Enjoy all your new books!!

The videos seem weird at first but when they work, I don’t care about how crazy they sound! Hopefully wearing your Fitbit more will get you back moving more, I know it always works for me.

  2. Red Iza

It’s the first time I hear about those videos, I’ll have to look them up ! Congrats on your Fitreaders, you’re doing very good – better than me 😉 I thought about getting a Fitbit, but it would be more time devoted to yet another task, however involved I may be, so I gave up and just do the best I can when I can. Have a great week 😉

The Fitbit works for me but I think just being aware and striving to do more is a great way of fitting in extra steps too. Hope you have a good week too!

    • trish

Awake sounds great, I see the early GR reviews aren’t great but I’ll keep an open mind until I read it for myself. Hope we both enjoy it!

I never heard of those videos you mentioned. I will though, because insomnia has been my buddy (not last night, because I feel asleep at 7:30!)

I snagged Awake too! Doesn’t it sound fascinating? 😀 thanks for the linkup!

Urrgghh, insomnia is my constant companion and it sucks! This videos (wacky as they sound) do help though. Let me know if they work for you!

  4. Katherine @ I Wish I Lived in a Library

I love the cover of the Melissa Hill and now that I’m thinking about it I may actually have it. I need to check my Kindle! The Youtube videos sound interesting. I have a hard time sleeping sometimes and that might be useful. Great links this week! I’ve saved this to go visit them. Have a great week!

The Melissa Hill book took me by surprise as I thought I had all her books. I hope when I start reading that I don’t find out that I already have it but it’s a distinct possibility! Next time you can’t sleep, you should try https://www.youtube.com/user/ASMRrequests and let me know if it works for you!

  5. Bea @Bea's Book Nook

The Other Child looks good,I may check that out. Lots of people in the blogging worldhave and love fitbits. Good luck with yours and your improvement program. Those videos are new to me; I may need to check them out.

    Have a good week!

I’ve never heard of ASMR videos before, but then I don’t have trouble sleeping usually. As long as I read before going to sleep I fall asleep easily. It does sound handy and I find it interesting to hear it works, it sounds funny. That’s pretty random indeed. I hope you have a great week and enjoy your new books!

People use them for anxiety issues as well but for me they are perfect for helping me to drift off to sleep. Thankfully as it’s something I struggle a lot with.

I know I love the Renaissance, there was just such a surge in creativity at that time that it makes it really exciting to read about. And yes the craziness too! 🙂

  7. Rachel

Lol thanks for the link-up! I love your direct response! And YES to the ASMR! Some people get like pins and needles/tingles on their head when listening, my sister discovered it but it sends me right to sleep. There’s a german girl (I think) who does excellent ones! There’s one with Alice in Wonderland, which is particularly sleep inducing lol R x

I’m jealous that I don’t get those tingles but I’ll settle for going to sleep. That’s major for me!

    • trish

If you have trouble sleeping or even just relaxing, it’s worth seeing if they work for you Catherine.

  8. Berls

The Fitbit had the same effect on me when I started with it and now it’s just part of my day that I push that number up! (I just need to fix my battery issues)

I’m really curious about Alive – I’ll have to check it out, thanks for putting it on my radar.

That sleep thing is cool – I’ve never really had trouble sleeping, but my bf does, so I’m going good to look it up for him 🙂 Have a great week!
