Book Review : No Safe House by Linwood Barclay

June 5, 2015 Book review 14 ★★★½

I’m a huge fan of Linwood Barclay and this book catches up with the characters of No Time For Goodbye seven years later.  I loved that book and couldn’t wait to see what fate had in store for this unlucky family next!

The New York Times bestselling author delivers the follow-up to No Time for Goodbye--an electrifying novel of suspense in which a family’s troubled past is about to return in more ways than one. And this time, they may not be able to escape.…

Seven years ago, Terry Archer and his family, who first appeared in No Time for Goodbye, experienced a horrific ordeal that nearly cost them their lives. Today, the echoes of that fateful night are still audible. Terry’s wife, Cynthia, is living separate from her husband and daughter after her own personal demons threatened to ruin her relationship with them permanently. Their daughter, Grace, is rebelling against her parents’ seemingly needless overprotection. Terry is just trying to keep his family together. And the entire town is reeling from the senseless murder of two elderly locals.

But when Grace foolishly follows her delinquent boyfriend into a strange house, the Archers must do more than stay together. They must stay alive. Because now they have all been unwillingly drawn into the shadowy depths of their seemingly idyllic hometown. For there, they will be reconnected with the man who saved their lives seven years ago, but who still remains a ruthless, unrepentant criminal. They will encounter killers for hire working all sides. And they will learn that there are some things people value much more than money, and will do anything to get it.

Caught in a labyrinth between family loyalty and ultimate betrayal, Terry must find a way to extricate his family from a lethal situation he still doesn’t fully comprehend. All he knows is that to live, he may have to do the unthinkable....

First Line of No Safe House by Linwood Barclay:

“Richard Bradley had never thought of himself as a violent man, but right now he was ready to kill someone.”

My Thoughts on No Safe House by Linwood Barclay:

First off I think you should read No Time For Goodbye first as it would be good to know the horrors from Cynthia’s past before you jump into this one.  It’s not strictly necessary but I think it will up your enjoyment level.  And also that book is FANTASTIC so why wouldn’t you!

I really enjoyed No Safe House but I wouldn’t say it had the same impact on me as No Time For Goodbye.  The concept is not as mysterious or as creepy but it’s still pretty gripping.  And I really care about these characters, even when they are doing all the wrong things and I’m screaming at them, I’m still on their side and want them to catch a break.

Cynthia and Terry are going through a temporary separation while they try to work some issues out.  And their 14 year old daughter Grace is being a typical teenager and pushing the limits as far as she can get away it.  But one night it all goes disastrously wrong when her bad-boy boyfriend involves her in criminal activity.  And yet again this ill-fated family are back in the murky criminal underworld.

This author knows how to pace a book with style.  The chapters are short and snappy and ALWAYS end too soon and on a cliff-hanger.  So you end up reading one more and one more and one more!   So he has got suspense nailed!  Plus there is plenty of wry humour in the book which I love as it balances out the creepy side.

There were two reasons that I didn’t rate it higher (but don’t forget 3.5 stars means I liked it a lot).

– I just couldn’t believe some of the choices Cynthia and Terry made.  Their past makes me understand a little and their protectiveness for Grace ditto BUT it still just felt unbelievable.

– It didn’t make the same impression on me as No Time For Goodbye

Overall though it was a fast-paced, action-packed entertaining read and I thoroughly enjoyed racing through it.

Who should read No Safe House by Linwood Barclay?

If you loved No Time For Goodbye, then I think you’d enjoy the sequel like I did as it’s fun to catch up with this family.  Fans of domestic grit-lit and those who like their thrillers with thrills, chills and laughs should also enjoy.  If you are a fan of authors such as Harlan Coben, Lisa Scottoline and James Patterson.

I just love Linwood Barclay. To mean he is in the same league as Harlan Coben for fast-paced, intense and enjoyable suspense stories. Thanks for sharing your honest review. As you say, you still really enjoyed it and I think people forget that not all books can be 5 stars. I look forward to picking this up when possible; he is an auto-read author for me.

Exactly I think it’s worth pointing out that a 3.5 star book is hoovering between like and love and that’s a pretty good book in my eyes! I see Linwood has another new book out soon, I can’t wait, they are all auto-buy for me.

The story was complete enough without a second book but it was still fun to catch up with the characters and it’s so fast-paced that it’s quick, enjoyable read.

I’ve not heard of this series before, but I am now totally curious about the first book. I shall definitely keep it in mind 🙂 it’s a pity this one wasn’t as awesome (seems like that’s often the way with second books!)

I didn’t love it as much as the first book but they are still a fun series. Fast paced and full of suspense!

Yay, do make sure you read the first one first though (No Time for Goodbye) as it will be a lot more enjoyable that way.
