The Sunday Post : Get your Bookish News #59

January 25, 2015 meme 52

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  Grab a cuppa and let me bend your ear (eyes?) for a few minutes with all my bookish news.

Randomness:

I won a customised mug from Glass Blasted over at Confessions of a Book Geek and it arrived this week.  I put my favourite bookish quote from Louisa May Alcott on it – “she is too fond of books and it has turned her brain” and a stack of books.  And I adore it!  The picture doesn’t do it justice, it is a lovely navy colour and is HUGE!  Perfect for a coffee addicted, book addled person like me.

Not a lot else going on here this week.  Operation Trish Transforms is still going strong!  I’m hitting the gym regularly and eating properly.  The weather is freezing so I’ve been making batches of homemade spicy veg soup to keep me full during the day.  It’s working perfectly and it’s yummy too.  So win win!

Second Chance Sunday – What happened here this week:

Second Chance Sunday – What caught my eye.  Why not go Sunday visiting?

Celine @ Nyx Book Reviews wonders Do Reviews Still Get Read?  A very interesting question that a lot of us have a vested interest in.  Hand on heart I love reading reviews and I did long before I was a book blogger.

Tonya @ Lilybloombooks has a rant about WHY ARCS AREN’T ALWAYS A GOOD THING!  I do agree but I still love them *hugs my arcs closer*

Michelle @ In Libris Veritas chats about Moving Forward.  I think it’s always important to remember why we started blogging in the first place and then when (some of ) the community gets negative, it’s easier to carry on doing your own thing.

Wattle @ Whimsical Nature confesses to the bookish crime of spoiling herself for books! *faints from shock*

Books I have received to review:

I’m sticking doggedly to my book ban *grimaces*

oh my god, I just have to say Congratulations for still continuing your book buying ban and book arc ban! I really need to do that…but I have been going light on them. I just had to get a few this past week though. lol.
by the way, I literally just started Rebecca (first like five pages) I’m gonna read it probably really slow, but at least it’s a start lol. I also have been (re)reading Lord of the Flies for “work” at my tutoring job. I’m not sure but I’ll probably whip up a classics post about the reread since I have to read t anyway. 😀 Have a good week hon!

I’m love/hating my book ban. I love not adding to the pile but I miss the excitement of new books. I’m thinking of continuing it in to Feb though but allowing myself 1 review book a week! I haven’t started Tess yet but I might later on today. I’d love to read a Lord of the Flies post, I don’t think I’ve ever read it but I do have vague memories of it from school so maybe I have!

  2. Red Iza

It looks like the mother of all coffee mugs 🙂 I have several mugs at home and a big one at work – for coffee, but for tea and herbal tea too. I’m supporting you fully on the book ban, I have so many books to read I should not buy any for the next 3 years, lol (as if !). Any chance we might get your spicy veg soup recipe, pretty please ?… Have a great week !

It is huge! I can’t fill it or I’d never get through it! I’m thinking of continuing a partial book ban into Feb where I allow myself one review book OR one bought book a week. That way I’m not adding too much to the pile but still get the thrill of a new book! I’m such an addict :O
The soup recipe is super easy. It’s just what ever veg you like (I use 2 carrots, 1 leek, 1 onion, mushrooms and 1 pepper), a litre of boiling water, 2 vegetable stock cubes and a mixture of spices (I use curry powder, cajun seasoning, hot chilli seasoning and basil). Just saute the onions and leeks first then add all the rest of the veg, mix the boiling water and the stock cube, and throw that in, then add the spices. And let simmer for 30 minutes. I use my hand blender then to remove the chunks at the end. Easy peasy!

I don’t have any willpower really, I know I’ll go on a mad book binge at the end of my ban! Good luck with your 1000 arcs :O

The soup is delicious and I love spicy food too so I’ve a heavy hand when adding the spices in 🙂 It’s definitely a winter warmer! And thank you, it’s always good to hear that!

  3. Lola

What a nice mug! I love big mugs as I drink large amounts of tea each day. I really liked Celine her post about reviews. I love reading them, but often notice they get the least comments on my blog. I try to comment regulary on reviews as well, but when I don’t have as much time I probably go for the discussion posts first.

I’m the same, I’ll usually tend to comment more on a discussion post as there is just more to say. I’m going to try more to comment on reviews though as I think we all need the encouragement.

  4. Laurel-Rain Snow

I love that mug…and the quote, too. Enjoy! And I applaud your workouts and healthy eating…very inspiring!

And your restraint about purchases and review books!

Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

I must keep that in mind as I use it Catherine as it will motivate me on even further! Thanks for that suggestion.

  5. Katherine @ I Wish I Lived in a Library

I absolutely love the mug! I’d like more bookish mugs and stuff but I always end up to cheap to actually spend money on them. Great job with the diet and exercise. I splurged a little today foodwise because we went out for barbecue but it was worth every calorie. The rest of the day I will be behaving myself though. Great job on your book ban! Have a great week!

I think this is the first bookish thing I’ve actually owned (apart from books!) and it’s because I won it! But now that I have it, I want more! Hope you enjoyed your bbq, it’s good for the mind to splurge now and again, life would be very boring if we didn’t 🙂

  6. Alma @ Journey Through Fiction

I love that mug! And the quote, too! But, ughh, book bans. Huge congrats for sticking with it! I tried one for a month last year, and it was agony. The minute the month was over, I stalked dozens of books on Amazon and I ended up going a bit crazy! The just don’t for for me, unfortunately. Have a great week, Trish, and happy reading!

  7. Berls

I just love the quote you picked for your mug – awesome! And congrats on doing so well with your diet & exercise. The veggie soup is an excellent idea that I may have to copy. Good job not adding books either – I know its hard, but giving your shelf some love is so worth it 🙂 have a great week Trish!

Can’t recommend the veg soup enough, it’s exactly what my body craves when it’s cold and miserable. And I love that my shelf is actually get some proper attention for once!

  8. Jessica@Lovin' Los Libros

I love that mug!!!! SO cute! I love all things with quotes. 😀 My Nook cover is filled with literary quotes and I don’t care that it’s canvas and a bit discolored now. I’ll never stop using it! 😀 Go you on no buying books! I just ran out of my Amazon GC, so I won’t be buying anymore myself. Now to stop the requests… LOL.

That Nook cover sounds fab. I’d be like you, I wouldn’t care how scrappy looking it got, I wouldn’t part with it! You can never have enough book quotes in your life!

    • trish

Now that you mention it, I can’t remember the last time I bought a book that I didn’t read a ton of review for first. And yay! Thank you 🙂

    • trish

I know I’m so happy with my mug. It’s the first bookish thing I’ve owned (apart from books!) but now I want more 🙂

  9. Michelle @ In Libris Veritas

Thank you for sharing the post Trish! I love the mug! And I sort of envy your resolve on the book buying ban…normally I never buy books, but some how I ended up with a cart full of international editions of Harry Potter. Oops…I’m glad you’re still going strong with your exercise too! I hope you have a good week and happy reading!

Lucky you! Some of those international editions of HP have amazing covers. I need to update mine someday too 🙂

    • trish

I’m being so careful with freebies too. I know they are free but I feel bad if I don’t get around to reading them. And right now I have more than enough books I’ve bought, books I’ve won and ARCs to be getting on with.

  10. A Voracious Reader

We can never have enough mugs. lol And go you on the book ban. I’ve limited myself on tours this year. I went a bit loco last year. It’s nice whittling the TBR down. 🙂

I practically cut out all tours out last year and I’m glad I made that decision. I just hate reading and posting to a certain deadline. Now I’ll only join about 3 a year and that’s only for a book that I’m longing to get my hands on!
