Between My Reads : Christmas Ads

November 22, 2014 Between Reads 9

Between My Reads is a feature that appears on here sporadically. As I’m sure you might have guessed by now, I’m passionate about books. However, they are not the be all and end all of my life so I thought it might be fun to share some other stuff now again here too. If this doesn’t interest you, don’t worry books will be back on the agenda tomorrow.

I LOVE Christmas adverts!  Normally as soon as an ad break comes on the telly, I’m fast forwarding or channel hopping as quick as I can.  But right now I think I’m enjoying the ads more than my TV shows!  Over the past few years, the standard has just gone up and up and this year there are two in particular that would warm up even the Grinchiest of hearts.  And yes I know they are commercials and aimed at getting us to spend money but I don’t care.  The cornier and schmaltzier the better!  They make me feel sentimental and I unashamedly love them.

The John Lewis ad – 2014:

Who can resist Monty the Penguin.  I want one too!  The music, the cuteness, the feels.  When the little boy covers the Penguins eyes before he shows him his Christmas pressies, that right there is when I start to choke up.  It just captures the magic of Christmas for me.

The Sainsbury Christmas Ad – 2014:

I think this is a perfect ad for the year of the 100th anniversary and it’s based on a real story of a Christmas Day truce of 1914.  It’s hard not to feel really sad while watching this one and it really plucks my heartstrings.   I had shivers the first time I saw it, it’s evocative and anything that ensures we never forget is a good thing, I think anyway.  And again it just captures the Christmas spirit for me.

Coca Cola Christmas Ad (the old one not sure what year)

It’s just not Christmas until I see this ad and can start humming ‘holidays are coming, holidays are coming’.  I love the excitement that builds up within me when I see this one.  Proof that your inner child is always excited at the thought of Christmas.

ESB Ad (from the 1980s)

This ad is just so poignant.  At a time when emigration was at an all time high in Ireland, the images of a mother fluttering around to get everything perfect for her returning son is just so emotional.  It hits me right in the feels and makes me feel so lucky to have both parents living just minutes from my house.

I love penguins! A few weeks ago someone shared the Monty the Penguin ad on facebook and I just love! It’s such a cute ad. Although I can’t remember for which product the ad actually was, I still think it is well done as it really captures that christmas magic and isn’t an ad you easily foget.

I still remember that Coco Cola ad from when I was younger and did watch tv. I only had to see that car of the ad and that song is now stuck in my head.

I am very interested in ads and in what makes people decide to buy certain products (I studied economic and consumer psychology). I don’t watch tv, but sometimes I am seriosuly tmepted to put it on, just to watch the ads, lol. Its just so fun to see which ads are out there and how companies market their product.

I came across a billboard today and it only featured a close up of chicken nuggets, no brand name, no text, nothing. It really made me wonder from which company the ad was and why they decided to make an ad like that. It got me thinking and I realized that’s probably exactly the kind of response they wanted to elicit. It was memorable just because the ad was so simple and devoid of any text or brand.

I love Penguins too, just watching them waddle around is enough to bring a smile to my face. And Monty the Penguin is such an adorable ad, it’s for John Lewis (a department store) but like you I often have no clue what the ads where advertising!
I didn’t realise you didn’t watch TV, why did you make that decision? Have you ever blogged about it, it would make an interesting post. I don’t watch a lot of TV but I always have it on for background noise and I have half an eye on it. But there are only 1 or 2 shows that I follow. It’s not a big deal for me at all, I’d rather read.
That’s such a strange add with the no branding, I can really see how it would work in a reverse way and make you want to know more. Interesting angle!

I hate having the tv on in the background as I get easily distracted by tv’s. It’s kinda funny, but if there’s a tv on I just have to watch and my eyes won’t leave the screen, even if I am not interested in what’s going.

I prefer silence over background noise. It wasn’t really a conscious descision to stop watching tv, basically when I moved out of my mom’s house I noticed I only put the tv on when I wanted to play on my playstation. I rather read and if my boyfriend and I want to watch a movie or series we watch it on his computer and put the couch in front of his computer. I might blog about it once, it’s normal for me, but I guess it would make an interesting post to read!

I don’t think I actually have favorite christmas commercials, but I’ve never been big into the Winter season as a whole so that might be why. (Why is everyone so happy, don’t they realize it’s cold? lol)
I do like the Coca-Cola commercials, they are always cute. Then there are the commercials I look for because that usually signifies the start fo the season for me like the Campbell’s soup commercial with the snowman and the Puffs tissues commercials.
There is one I enjoy for Thanksgiving here in the US. It’s a Publix commercial and has two little Pilgrim salt & pepper shakers. Super cute

I found the Public ad on Youtube, it’s really cute! Love it. I’m not a huge fan of Christmas but I try to hype myself up in to the mood for focusing on the things I do enjoy like the ads and Christmassy books and a few favourite movies like It’s A Wonderful Life.

I know, isn’t Monty just the sweetest! I felt ridiculous crying the first time I saw it but then I showed it to a friend on my phone and she welled up in the same place, obviously we are both saps!
I love the sound of ad you mentioned too. And it’s so true as well, time together is the best pressies. I think that’s the odd thing about Christmas Ads, they have a commercial focus but at the same time there are lovely messages attached to them which reflect the truer nature of Christmas.
