Book Review : A Matter of Heart by Heather Lyons

January 20, 2014 Book review 6 ★★★★

This book broke my heart in 3.  Heather Lyons has written a series that revolve around Chloe who is a creater/destroyer and I think Heather is one herself!  She has created a series that has destroyed my heart!

No longer in high school, Chloe Lilywhite is now living and working in Annar, the Magicals’ city-state plane of existence. Since moving, she’s joined the Council, gone on missions with the Guard, moved into her own apartment, and enrolled at the University of Annar. Plus, she’s happily engaged to be married to Jonah Whitecomb, the literal man from her dreams, not to mention her Connection. While she still struggles with aspects of her craft, Chloe feels like she’s finally coming into her own, especially after a difficult year that had her questioning nearly everything in her life.

After a brutal attack by the Elders, her life is turned upside down once more. Accusations fly throughout the Council and Guard, forcing Chloe to confront her worst fears about what’s she’s capable of as a Creator. And then there’s the matter of Kellan Whitecomb, Jonah’s twin brother and Chloe’s ex, who resurfaces after disappearing months before. Although Chloe chose Jonah, and despite their best efforts, the two find it hard to stay away from one another.

But no matter what Fate throws at her, Chloe is determined to take charge of her life, even as it begins to spiral out of control.

First Line of A Matter of Heart:

“But…I’m only eighteen.”

My Thoughts on A Matter of Heart:

Poor Chloe, poor Jonah, poor Kellan!  I have come to care about them all deeply and my heart can’t see any end of the trouble and conflict for them all.  They are blessed and cursed with a magical connection that causes them to love deeply and this is a love triangle with no clear winner.  I have no idea what way it will go.

As in the first book, I love the writing style.  It is just so readable and hooks you in line by line so you sink deeper and deeper into the messy love affairs.  I am shocked that I don’t hate Chloe by now with her back and forth but I think it’s because of the magical connection that I forgive her what I wouldn’t in others.

The secondary characters are starting to shine too.  One in particular is Callie who is also in love in Jonah and who is a surprisingly good ally for Chloe.  I love how blunt and matter of fact she is and any girl that takes you shopping and drinking to drown the pain is ok in my book!

I found this book a bit steamier than A Matter of Fate which was fun!  I loved the spicy scenes which were sexy but not overly graphic.  The exotic and romantic locations where the cherry on top for me too.  If you are going to have your heart ripped out, might as well do it places like Rome and Hawaii!

There were times where I wished the pace was a bit snappier but then something would happen and I’d be so busy feeling all the feels that I’d ignore that complaint.  And by the time the end came, I wasn’t ready for the end.  Thank Gods there is another book that I can get my hands on asap!

Yep my heart is shattered from this series. I’m building up the nerve for book 3 but plan to read it soon. I felt exactly the same about Callie, she really shone in this book though.

I’m still so torn between the twins but I think I have a favourite! The end kind of shocked me a little, I can’t wait to see what happens next 🙂
