Uninvited by Leah Spiegel and Meg Summers
Series: South Hills Sidekicks #1
on 11 Feb 2012
Genres: Chick Lit, Mystery, YA
Source: Blog Tour
When Alley started her senior year at Upper East High in the South Hills area, it was supposed to be the usual drag of hanging out with people who spent more on one outfit than Alley did on her entire wardrobe. That was until Kirsten, a girl in their clique, suddenly goes missing and the only people who seem to care are her friends.
All evidence leads to the new comer Shane, a cocky and self-pretentious person in Alley’s opinion, but the police seem uninterested so she and the rest of the girls start a little investigation of their own. But they are nowhere closer to finding Kirsten than when they started and now they had the police’s attention; just not in the way they expected.
The girls have to start over and discover that maybe it wasn’t an outsider who took Kirsten, but someone within their own clique who has something to hide; a secret that just might have gotten Kirsten killed.
My Review :
I got off to a bit of a shaky start with this book. The main character Alley who is a senior in high school is part of the popular gang in school. Not that she is rich or beautiful or cool like the others but because as she puts it herself she is “part of a packaged deal; a buy one get one free type of bargain, the other part of the package being my best friend Val”.
I was instantly on my guard as these girls just sounded like an up-themselves-clique, one with no depth of friendship or no loyalty to each other. I was wrong and I was right! Alley and Val are true friends; they are ying and yang, balance each other out and can rely on one another. The other girls are more acquaintances but as the book progresses so does their friendships and as their bond grew in to something more meaningful, I found myself caring more and more about them all.
The main thing you need to know about this book is that it is laugh out loud funny. Alley is snarky, with a biting sense of dry humour and quick with the put downs which I loved about her. Her friend Val is hilarious – she is as enthuastic as a puppy and with just about as much common sense as one too. I thought this book would have a Nancy Drew feel about it but honestly this gang are more like Dumb and Dumber. They are the worst would-be detectives in the world even down to Val managing to pepper spray herself!
Without going into details, there is a bit of a forbidden romance budding. This did make me feel a bit uneasy as it would have just felt wrong not to mention unethical. However it stayed at the flirty level and I was fine with that. Plus it added more comedy caper escapades to the story. It is the humour that keeps the book flowing along as the mystery is fairly predictable but to be honest I was so busy laughing that I didn’t really care.
If you are looking for a light-hearted, fun, fast paced YA book then Uninvited fits the bill. Well worth a read and it is all but guaranteed to make you giggle at their ridiculous antics.
