When a Telephone Box is a Library

April 26, 2013 Bookish chat 24

Bookish Finds is a feature that Asti @ A Bookish Heart does weekly on her blog. She finds the most amazing book art every week for us all to admire, so I strongly suggest you go check hers out after you have a look at my little find.

I don’t usually have bookish discoveries (apart from books!) but when I stumbled on this I knew I had to share. In the UK, a number of the old, defunct but iconic red phone boxes have been transformed into little libraries. No membership, no fees, drop a book or take a book, the choice is yours. They each stock about 100 titles, selection is varied and book turnover is rapid. They are open 24 hours a day and are lit at night.

So there you have it, a little library where you never know what you will find and it never closes. I always say books call me but this puts a whole new spin on that! The cynical part of me does wonder what happens at night to ensure the village idiots don’t wreck, vandalise or pee on them. But let’s not think about that. I think it’s a great idea (a novel idea as one newspaper headline said!), I know if I was near one I would never be able to walk past without checking it out.

A book calling you? Definitely a fun twist! I’m actually really excited about this find since I’ll be heading over there in the fall. My goal will definitely to be to visit one! I’m not sure if I’ll take any books (especially after the thought of some kids peeing on them which you put in my head), but it’d be fun to check out!

    Great find Trish 🙂

Yes, sorry about that! If it smells ok though, I’d go for it! Sounds so cool, I will on a mission to track one down the next time I’m in England.

Yes Kimba, parks, public places and every street corner! But then we would never get anything done, we would be too busy checking them out!

Oh my god, that is so the coolest thing! I would love to visit one of these in person! So glad you shared this. 😀

I love it! I would visit one with a stack of books in tow and then walk away with a different stack of books. 😛 Although I wonder the same thing about security when people rob or vandalise them. :/

But other than that, this thing is awesome. 🙂

I think it’s a fantastic idea and I’d love visit one (or two or three 🙂 Another bookish thing that I’d love to use at least once is a book vending machine.

A very interesting and awesome concept! I would totally take the chance and use this. How unique and fun!

What a brilliant idea! I wish we had something like that here. Although I’m with you, I would kind of wonder what happens at night (or even during the day in certain areas) – people who just can’t seem to help themselves and like to wreck things for others. Hopefully that’s not the case though because this really is a fantastic idea. I think I’d visit it daily if we had something like that here!

Yes Marie, there is no way I could walk past one either with out ducking in for a look. Hopefully they have found ways to keep the trouble makers from wrecking them.
